Paci-filled Elephants

I am long over-due for a check-in. Things are good around here, but it has been extremely busy. Amanda went back to work after the first of the year, and things have been extremely busy at my work. Add that to the general hectic nature of having a 3 year-old and a 3 month-old, and you have a recipe for exhaustion.

Aliza was an awesome baby for the first 3 months of her life. She was a pretty good sleeper from the beginning. She was almost always in a good mood. Then a couple weeks ago she started getting her first tooth. She became a little grumpy bear. She was almost always crying. If you held her and bounced her and walked around the house she might calm down. Things have been better over the last few days, but she still has her moments. It has been stressful.

2 Weeks With The Newest Baby Bidwell

It has been an interesting couple of weeks for us. Two weeks ago yesterday we had Baby Bidwell #2. Everything went really well. I am so thankful that baby Aliza was perfectly healthy and Amanda has had a quick recovery. We got to come home on Halloween day, which meant I got to take Amelia trick-or-treating in our neighborhood that evening. She loved getting candy. We went with some of our friends and she had a great time with the other kids. I was walking up to the houses with her and at one point she stopped me and said, “Daddy, don’t come with me.” It broke my heart. She isn’t supposed to be this independent at not even 3 years old.

On Shaving

I have been shaving with a safety razor, shaving brush, and soap bowl for almost a year now. I wrote about it last December here. It still takes me longer to shave than with the five blade razors, but it is totally worth it. I have almost perfected the art of getting the right amount and consistency of lather on the brush every time. There is basically zero irritation. I rarely ever cut myself. These days shaving is bordering on being fun.

I am about halfway though my $10 pack of razor blades. I am on my second bowl of soap. So yes, the up-front cost is fairly high, but I have shaved for an entire year with a variable cost of less than $15. That is about what one 4-pack Gillette Fusion blades would cost.

I don’t mean to be that hipster guy who tries to convince you that you’re shaving wrong by using “modern” equipment . Over the years I have tried several different products and devices to make my shave better. More than once I thought I had the solution, only to find myself irritated and in more pain than ever before. Shaving old-school is by far the best my face has felt, and it is still working well a year later. I don’t think I will be experimenting with anything else in the foreseeable future.

Dusting Off The Blog

Well, well. I have once again let my blog sit idle for several months. I guess I only write when I have the motivation to write, and I haven’t had any for a while. For some reason I do now. I dusted off the site and switched up the colors a bit. I also got it to display properly on the iPhone.

It has been a busy few months. We have been trying to keep a very active toddler entertained, getting settled into the new house, and preparing for baby #2. We are only a couple weeks away from meeting our little girl. For posterity, I’ve been trying to capture what it is like to be a family of three. I know when Amelia came along it was nearly impossible to imagine what life was like without her in it. I read back on some of the things I wrote and it seems crazy to have an entire Saturday to do whatever I wanted.

I don’t know what life is going to be like with another baby in the house, but I have a feeling I’m not going to be able to fathom the “simple times” of only having a single child to tend to. It is going to be exciting, but I’m sure it is going to be a lot of work. I am going to try to commit to using the Everyday iPhone app to document the progress of my wrinkles, receding hairline, and gray hairs. And we will of course be taking plenty of pictures of our girls.

Do Not Worry, I Still Exist

It has come to my attention that I have not posted anything to this site for an extremely long time. It is ironic that when we are the most busy and doing things that might be worth writing about, we usually don’t take the time to sit and write.

Since March we have done a lot. We started shopping for a new house. We bought a new house. (That happened fast.) We had family come and visit. I traveled to Las Vegas for work. We moved into our new house. We cleaned and painted and stained and cleaned and caulked and cleaned some more and got our old house ready to sell. And we hopefully sold our old house. (That happened pretty fast too… thankfully!)

We’ve been in our new house for about 6 weeks now. It has been a crazy time which included a trip home to Indiana for a week. Each day we are getting more and more settled, but it still feels like we have a long ways to go. And it feels like there is a never ending list of stuff we need to buy.

We loved our old neighborhood. We had a great house with great neighbors. It was tough to leave but we were out-growing it. So far we love our new house, though our first few weeks have been an adventure. We are looking forward to getting settled in and back to “normal”. Nothing feels normal anymore with a 2.5 year old in the house with an extremely active imagination.

I’ll try to do better about checking in on the blog. I go back and forth on whether having a “journal” on the internet is something I really want to do. As you know I enjoy writing, and it is basically a tree in the woods deal. If nobody reads it, does it even matter anyway?

The Spambots Attack!

I’ve posted a few times in the last several days on this blog and I have been bombarded with spam comments. The robots are getting a little more sophisticated, but are still easily identified. And of course, every comment is followed by a link to some random malware-filled website. I will not be including those links.
“Heу! It іs my 1st сommеnt hеre tο ensure і
i reсently wantеd to аlloω for an eаѕу shοut out and say I trulу enjoy eхamining your blogѕ.
Do you rеcommenԁ all othег blogs/wеbsitеs/fоrums that

Last year there was a spam bot that would write a few words and then quote part of the post. It resulted in some hilarious comments. Unfortunately I don’t have any samples of those to share, but here are a couple of the recent ones. They can be very flattering.

This was on the Sergio tree post…
“You can definitеly cаll at your ѕκills inside thе paintings you’re writing. The arena desires for more passionate writers as if you who aren’t аfraid tο mentiοn thаt they bеlіeve.”
At least I think this next one is supposed to be a compliment…
“Thіs web pаge is my sucking in, rеally good ѕtуle аnd реrfect subject themе.”
And one of my favs…
“Deferenсе to writеr, ѕomе eхcellent entropy.”
I have excellent entropy, so I have that going for me.

Better Use Your Tree-Iron

A young Sergio Garcia captured our attention as he played this shot from up against a tree as part of his back nine charge on Tiger at the 1999 PGA Championship at Medinah. His run and jump up the fairway was an iconic image for golf fans. He would end up losing to Tiger by one stroke that weekend, but we were sure we’d see him at the top of the leaderboard at majors for years to come.

This week at Bay Hill Sergio found himself playing another shot from the trees. This one was a bit more precarious. He showed he still has guts. It has been 14 years. His career hasn’t lived up to the expectations. Not even close… but he sure is fun to watch. Shortly after that shot he withdrew from the tournament, illustrating that some of the reasons for his struggles over the years might be related to his poor attitude.

Just like Sergio’s first famous tree shot, Tiger came away with the win this weekend too. Tiger has shown a few glimmers of his prior dominance since his 2010 downfall. He’s started out strong the last couple years, but hasn’t had anything to show for it. A lot of people think this is the year he will make his big comeback… but they said that last year too. We'll see what happens at The Masters.

Don't Hit The Snooze Button

It's Monday morning. Did you use your snooze button today? I did. I'm an avid user of the snooze button. Maybe I should stop blaming my restless 2 year-old for my daily tiredness and start blaming myself (or my alarm clock).

How Our Brains Make Memories

The human brain is one of the most complex and enigmatic systems that exists in the world. The fact that we all have a functioning one attached to our shoulders detracts from the impressiveness a bit. Scientists have poked it and prodded it and run electricity through it and we still understand very little about the specifics of storing and recalling memories. Our own human brains seem incapable of understanding the complexities that govern itself.

Long term memories are formed when our brain creates a network of neurons that all fire together in a consistent sequence. It has long been thought that once this network is formed we are able to gaze upon the memory, but it is essentially read-only. We are not manipulating the construction of the network, and therefore unable to change the memory after it is formed. This is how we would presumably want it to work. Sure, memories can fade and certain details can be lost over time, but we don't go in and change components of the memory just by calling it up in our brains.

A neuroscientist had a theory that memory is malleable, and has been able to demonstrate it through experimentation. He is basically saying that when we access a memory we also risk altering that memory by inadvertently weaving in elements or changing details based on other related memories or a multitude of external factors. Once we are done thinking about it and want to commit that thing back to memory, it is forever changed and our initial copy is gone. We have no conscious way to know the memory changed because in our head the neurons that “held” that memory have essentially been re-wired. We will be just as confident, if not more1 confident, of the new incorrect memory as we were of the old one.

This memory manipulation especially affects “flash bulb” memories. This is when you say things like, “I will never forget exactly what I was doing the moment I learned about the September 11th attacks”. As we access the memory it gets changed, but our confidence in the accuracy of that memory only gets stronger.

"Nader, now a neuroscientist at McGill University in Montreal, says his memory of the World Trade Center attack has played a few tricks on him. He recalled seeing television footage on September 11 of the first plane hitting the north tower of the World Trade Center. But he was surprised to learn that such footage aired for the first time the following day. Apparently he wasn’t alone: a 2003 study of 569 college students found that 73 percent shared this misperception."
Basically… a lot of our memories are false. Our brain is continuously manipulating them as we access them.

This is a scary thought. To a certain extent the way we perceive our own self is made up of false information. We are making decisions based on incorrect facts that we think are true. Most of our conversations involve recounting stories from our past. Most of this stuff is filled with lies that we don't realize we are telling.

However, it may not be all bad. There might be a reason for why things work this way. We might be changing our memories for our own good.

“…editing might be another way to learn from experience. If fond memories of an early love weren't tempered by the knowledge of a disastrous breakup, or if recollections of difficult times weren't offset by knowledge that things worked out in the end, we might not reap the benefits of these hard-earned life lessons. Perhaps it’s better if we can rewrite our memories every time we recall them. Nader suggests that reconsolidation may be the brain’s mechanism for recasting old memories in the light of everything that has happened since. In other words, it just might be what keeps us from living in the past.”
This article is worth a read.

It's Time For March Madness

From the Wikipedia entry for “March Madness”...

March Madness is a popular term for season-ending basketball tournaments played in March. March Madness is also a registered trademark currently owned exclusively by the NCAA. The genesis of the term may be derived from Canadian politics; the fiscal year for the Canadian and Japanese governments begins on April 1. In order to be spared budget reductions, program and agency administrators and politicians, realizing that they had budget money remaining, begin to spend funds during March as though they are “mad” (crazy), and such spending to stave off budget reductions became known in Canada as “March Madness”.
Hmmm. I can't think of a more boring origin story for the moniker that we associate with the most exciting sporting event of the year. Leave it to Canada. Either way, this should be a fun year to watch the tournament.

Making a Comeback

I don’t post to Facebook or twitter a ton because I am convinced that other people don’t care about my day to day life. Writing a blog is the same thing, but even more long-winded. I don’t usually enjoy listening to or reading about the daily minutia. However, I do like to read what other people write. Not when they spell the wrong form of “there” or misuse “literally”. Not those times. But most of the other times when they are writing about something they care about.

I’ve had this blog for a few years and I have allowed it to languish. Nothing seems important enough to write for the Internet to see. Back in the day, like way back, the people who had important things to say would go to the trouble of publishing their own newspaper. I have to believe it was a major pain, and quite costly. If I lived back then I surely would not have had a newspaper. Now in the age of the Internet the barriers have been eliminated. To write something for the public to read we don't need to have anything important to say, because it is easy and free... which is why the Internet is mostly pictures of our lunch and "funny" cats. I don’t think Benjamin Franklin would be amused.

I still don’t think I have anything all that important to say, but I do enjoy writing. I took a break from the blog for awhile because it was feeling like a chore. Something that is fun shouldn't feel like work. I mean… ain’t nobody got time for that. But I’m done with my break now and I'm going to get back at it.

Getting a last minute February post in

I felt compelled to write today seeing as I had not yet done so in the month. I didn't want to skip February altogether.

Instead of writing this month I was once again re-doing the site. I don't think I will ever stop messing with it. It seems pretty stupid to keep changing the backend code on a site I hardly ever post to, but that is how I roll.

I guess I have to give an Amelia update because... well, she is awesome. She is at the height of her imagination. We rarely are living in the real world. There is always some sort of pretend game going on. Every day is her birthday party. It is usually short and she is satisfied with getting unwrapped presents that consist of toys she already owns, but we are always sure to celebrate. Sometimes her birthday party is directly followed by my birthday party. I think she wants to make sure I don't feel left out. But only every other day or so.

Her new favorite thing is to go into her kitchen and poke her head out from behind the counter with her hands cupped around her mouth... "LUNCH TIME DADDY! Come on! Let's eat!" She usually makes some corn on the stove, or nukes some pizza in her "microphone". Then we have a spot of tea with honey and finish it off with some cookies. It is always "delicious" and "refreshing".

Our February was a lot of fun and games, but not all fun and games. Amelia and I have had a few standoffs. She is proving to be a very stubborn little girl. Last Friday she screamed and growled at me for over an hour while I tried to put her to bed. It was a battle of wills that I eventually won only because she fell asleep before she could continue yelling at me. It was the most patient I have ever been in my entire life. Even though she was very upset with me, I feel like we kind of bonded. We laughed about it the next day at McDonalds over a happy meal, so we are all good.

The bed-time angst and not sleeping through the night is the hardest part right now. It feels like we are always tired. At least I feel like I am always tired. For March I'm looking forward to *hopefully* getting some sleep.

Quite The Imagination

Things are mostly back to normal around here. Both Amanda and I are feeling better, and went back to work today. Amelia seems fine. She has another few days of meds. She has done well with taking her medicine, but we've had to bribe her with candy. When we tell her it is time to take her medicine she crosses her arms and says, "I don't want my medicine" in her most serious tone of voice. But the promise of a Starburst gets her to cave almost every time.

Amelia has had quite the imagination lately. She got sent to time out this weekend because she was "feeding the birdies" by throwing pistachios on the floor in the living room. Yesterday she was playing in her kitchen and she started answering the phone. I'm so glad I was home sick so I could witness it. All of these conversations happened one right after another in the matter of about one minute...

picks up phone...
"Oh hi, what is your name? Oh, hi Pink. That is beautiful. I am so happy."
... hangs up phone

picks up phone...
"We have to hurry we will be late. We better go home."
... hangs up phone

picks up phone...
"Hmm. What I need to fix breakfast?
Hmm. Honey?
Yumm!
My Bowl!
Okay. Here you go little elephant."
...hangs up phone

picks up phone...
"What your name? Oh...Kipper!
Yes... that's my Mommy.
You want to come our house? Sure!
You want to play farm? *Giggles*
You want play with Divot? Oh yes?
You want play with Birdie?"
...hangs up phone

picks up phone...
"Hello. Very Nice.
See my toys?... and my ball hammer? I lost it!... at Target!
I looked everywhere!
... hangs up phone

Lately everything is a game of pretend. There is an alligator that lives in our fireplace and anytime Amelia hears a noise she will blame it on him.

Today when I got home from work she was very sullen. She moped around for a minute. When I asked her what was wrong she wouldn't say. Then she looked at me... "Daddy. I better go home." She walked to her room and got in her bed (that is her home) and laid her head down. I was actually getting worried. She seemed really upset about something. I sat in bed with her and rubbed her back. A few moments later she sits up, smiles... "Daddy! I am not sad anymore." I'm not sure what her goal was, but she had me fooled. It was definitely all an act. We are going to have to watch out for this one.

Under Quarantine

So far 2013 has treated us well, but everything went off the rails a few days ago. Thursday night Amelia woke up and she was not a happy camper. She was up half the night. She would fall asleep and wake herself up crying a little while later.

I was exhausted all day at work on Friday, and things weren’t any better at home. Amanda was tired and Amelia was a mess. She definitely wasn’t the sweet little girl we are used to. In the afternoon Amelia’s eyes got all red and swollen and she started to get junk building up in the corners of them. Amanda decided to call the doctor.

After i got home from work we headed to the doctor. Amelia didn’t want to go. In the car she kept saying “I don’t need a checkup”. We got there around 6 and waited… and waited. The doc finally saw us and we found out Amelia had her first ever ear infection, as well as conjunctivitis. We got her prescription and headed to walmart to get it filled.

The ear infection explained why Amelia was having so much trouble sleeping. She didn’t get a nap on Friday and by the time we got home from running around she was tired. I was too. I fell asleep on our living room floor about 15 minutes after we got home.

Amelia was once again up half the night. Saturday morning she didn’t want to do anything… but by lunch time she was getting up, walking around and playing a little bit. By the afternoon she had glimpses of her old self. While Amelia was on the upswing, Amanda and I were going in the other direction. Amanda was getting a sore throat on Saturday and I had a headache and felt extremely tired. Mostly because I hadn’t had more than a couple hours of consecutive sleep for the past two nights.

Yesterday both Amanda and I got feeling worse. By the evening it was pretty clear I wouldn’t be going to work today. I had a fever most of the evening and all through the night. Amanda woke up today with a really bad sore throat and body aches. We both went to see the doctor. I have strep throat and he thinks Amanda is getting the flu.

All three of us are sick at the same time. That hasn’t happened before. We are all on prescription medication, and we are all grumpy and tired. It is probably best to steer clear of the Bidwell household right now.

Happy New Year

It is hard to believe 2012 is almost over. The year flew by, but that is a cliché thing to say. When I look at my daughter it is hard to believe only a year has passed. My wife and I started 2012 taking care of a baby. Now we are sharing life with a tiny little person1. A year ago Amelia could barely walk. Now it seems like she can do it all. She can communicate and understand most anything you say to her. She has opinions and desires, and she isn't afraid to share them with us. A year ago she could laugh, but now she has a sense of humor. And she is funny.

2012 was good to us. We are happy and healthy. We can't really ask for anything more.

Amelia has grown so much. A little each day. It is hard to notice as it happens. Every parent wants to remember each stage his child so quickly passes through. I wish I could capture each day and put it in a bottle to open up later. My mind won't be able to remember all the things I want it to, and that makes me sad. I have done my best to document, but I have surely fallen short. There is the constant struggle to enjoy things in the moment as you experience them, and to capture pictures and videos to look back on later.

I have snapped thousands of photos, and written tens of thousands of words in the past 12 months, but it will never be enough to adequately recount her transformation into an amazing little toddler. I have a sense of how it happened for now, but that will quickly be replaced by her new milestones, and all the moments we share in 2013. I guess that is okay. It is just going to keep getting more fun, and she is going to keep getting more awesome.

I will keep on taking pictures and writing. Maybe I will even post to my blog a little more consistently in 2013. Maybe.

Have a safe and happy New Year friends.

My December Check-in

I have been feeling extremely overwhelmed the last several weeks. There is nothing in particular causing this, it is combination of traveling, work, the holidays, and just the demands and emotions of a toddler. There are a lot of things in there that I cannot control. When I get feeling like that my initial reaction is to simplify as much about the things I can control.

I started off November with a week-long work trip to Dallas. A few days after that we loaded up the car and drove to Indiana for Thanksgiving. We had a great week with my family, then made the 12 hour trip back to Arkansas. We were home for 4 days then we got on a plane to go to Orlando for Amanda's Grandmother's memorial service. It was both a physically and emotionally draining weekend. We got back last Monday night and I went to work on Tuesday to see a huge pile of stuff I had to get done.

All week I've felt behind on my sleep. Amelia is totally off her schedule. She has been staying up until at least 10pm every night. My wife usually has to lay down in the crib with her to coax her into going to sleep. Amelia went without a nap yesterday and got to bed a little earlier, so hopefully we get her back on track over the next couple days.

With Christmas coming Amelia is going to get some new toys. We already had Christmas with my family and she got some new things. Today we went through her toy box and bagged up a ton of stuff that she doesn't play with anymore to make room for her new loot. I already feel much better about the condition of our living room. Simplify. Remove distractions.

I have realized over the last few months that we were not watching much tv. The growing list of shows on our dvr felt more like a to-do list than a form of entertainment. I'd been thinking about canceling our cable for a while now, but this week I pulled the trigger. I called AT&T Uverse on Friday and told them I wanted to cut the cable. It was a clean break. We can't watch any of the stuff that was sitting our our dvr, and I am okay with that. I hooked up our OTA antennas. We are able to get all our local stations in HD with an antenna. I'm looking forward to only being able to pick from 6 channels, and not having a dvr. I'm even more excited about all the money we will be saving.

The craziness that Christmas brings isn't over yet, but the finish line is in sight. I have been trying to focus on experiencing everything through my daughter's eyes and sharing in her excitement. I think we are going to do Christmas at our house next weekend and I am really looking forward to it.

That is all I have for now. Maybe I will check in next month.

My New Shave

Ever since I started shaving I have not been a fan. My super-sensitive face skin became irritated by every method I tried. Over the years I’ve had every type of disposable razor out there. I’ve used 2, 3, 4, and 5 blades. I’ve had two different electric razors. Foams, gels, lotions, salves… I’ve tried it all. I’ve never been happy with the results.

Over a year ago my best friend told me about the wet shave. Essentially the wet shave is how a guy used to shave his face back in the 40's and 50's. I get an image of a barber lathering up the clients face. It is like that, but without the straight razor. I was eager to try it, but the initial cost is quite high and I ended up talking myself out of it. I was convinced that all these years of technological advancement would undoubtedly outperform a 70 year old shaving method. I forgot about the wet shave and spent the last 12 months dumping more money into Gillette fusion blades.

Then I signed up for my free week trial of The Magazine and read The Wet Shave by Lex Friedman. I sent a message to my friend and asked him if he was still shaving “old school”. He was. He still loved it. I was sold.

The Hardware

I added all of these items to my Amazon wish list and sent it to my parents for ideas for Christmas. We exchanged gifts with them at Thanksgiving and they got me my entire shaving setup. They are awesome!

The Transition

My first shave was slow and I hadn’t broken in the brush so there were bristles all over the place. It did feel pretty nice though, and the results were good. I immediately loved the soap and lather method. There is no way I will ever go back to canned gel. I wasn’t as excited about the single blade safety razor right at first. I had to rethink how I shave. I cut myself more than I ever did with the 5 blade setup, but it is no big deal. I just have to go a little slower.

Going in my main concern was with the increased time it would take to complete my morning routine. Most mornings I am rushed. I typically only shaved every other day. Going to an every day shaving routine was going to be tough, especially if it took longer. I was worried I wouldn’t be able to stick with it just because I didn’t have the time.

The Results

Over the last couple weeks my face is the most comfortable it has been in years. The positive effects were immediate. I haven’t had any irritation at all. While it does take me longer to shave, I have started to look forward to it. I feel like I am taking care of my face, and not just shaving it.

The actual act of shaving isn’t better than it was before. I do like the feel of the soap and the brush, but the razor creates a stinging sensation on the skin that I didn’t experience before. It is simultaneous pain and cooling relief. I’ve almost come to enjoy it. I have a little more trouble getting a good shave on a couple parts of my neck where the hairs grow weird. However, my technique is improving.

After the shave is over my face feels much better than it ever has other methods. I am not quite sure what to attribute it to, but it doesn’t matter. It is awesome. I can shave every day without my neck getting red and burning afterward, and I am thankful for that.

The shave feels closer than it did with my 5 blade razor, and my skin feels better.

Conclusion

In the last three weeks I’ve spent more time shaving than I did the six weeks prior to that. However, It hasn’t been a hassle. Shaving has been as close to enjoyable as I ever thought it could be. My face has been pain free despite the occasional cut on my neck.

I haven’t mastered the wet shave yet, but I feel like I am getting better. I can use a blade 4 or 5 times before switching. In a year I will go though about 65 blades,a whole $6.50 in cost. My cost with Gillette Fusion blades was about $50 per year. I’m not sure how to estimate the savings on shaving gel, but it is significant as well.

I think this is going to work out well.

Playing in the Leaves

Fall hit Northwest Arkansas a couple weeks ago and our tree started dropping leaves all over the yard. Last weekend it was really nice out so Amelia and I decided to play outside for a while while Amanda was at work. We raked up piles of leaves and jumped in them, then Amelia wanted to help me clean them all up. Now this week the rest of the leaves have fallen, so it looks like we have more work to do today.

Hanging in there

It has been a rough week around here. The flu has gotten the best of all members of our family. I am the last to get it. I felt horrible yesterday. The entire day I only had water, crackers, and a Sprite. I'm still not 100%, but feeling much better today. The girls had the same thing earlier in the week. Amelia threw up several times. Other than spitting up as a baby, she hasn't even puked. She handled it like a champ… didn't get upset at all. I wasn't home for all the fun, but from what Amanda said she did really well.

This week we took a shot at potty training. I wasn't even actively engaged in it that much, and it was still one of the worst things ever. Amelia did not respond to it well. After the first day she got extremely annoyed with the whole deal and basically shut us out. She wouldn't respond to anything we asked her, or even make eye contact. You could tell she hated it, and it made me hate it too.

It turned into a battle of wills and eventually the kiddo won out. I think she understood what we were trying to do, but I guess she just wasn't ready. We will take a break for a little while and I'm sure she will be more receptive to it.

She has become quite the emotional ninja the last few weeks. She has started throwing fits more frequently to try and get what she wants. She gets frustrated easily and starts flailing around or even grabbing things and chucking them. She knows these things get a response from us and has started using them to her advantage. I no expert in psychology1, but I can tell when I am being manipulated. I'm just amazed at how good she is at it.

Last night she got out of the bath and had to do her normal running around the house in her birthday suit. We joked with her that she better get dressed or Divot (the dog) was going to bite her butt. A little bit later she comes around the corner screaming and grabbing her butt claiming that Divot bit her. “Divy bite me”, she says. But the dog was on the other side of the room. I couldn't believe it. I don't know what her goal was, but she did a pretty good job at acting like she had been injured. I'd written a post a few months ago saying that we might be in the “terrible 2's.” I was wrong. I think we are almost there now.

Even though she has her moments Amelia is a sweet-heart 99% of the time. When she asks us for things she says “please” and “thank-you”. She has started saying “bless you” and “excuse me” and uncannily knows when to apply each one. When I leave for work I'll tell her I love her and she will say “I love you too, daddy.”, which is amazing. A couple times she has been snuggling and says “I wuv you” totally unprompted. Those are the times when you feel like you have discovered the meaning of life or something. This is what I am here for. This is my reason for being alive.

This morning Amelia asked for an apple. She didn't want us to cut it up. She wanted to go after the whole thing. She did pretty well, but gave up after about 20 minutes and asked me to cut it up for her.

  1. I minored in psychology and took a child psychology course… but somehow it didn't prepare me for fatherhood. They might need to look at their curriculum.  ↩
