Dead Birds

On New Years day they found as many as 5,000 dead red-winged black birds in Beebe, AR that apparently just fell from the sky.  Weird.  Then they also reported that 100,000 dead drum fish were washing up on the shores of the Arkansas river.  Over the last week there have been reports from Louisiana, Kentucky, and even Sweden of more mass bird deaths.  The explanation given for the ones in Arkansas and Sweden was that the birds were frightened by fireworks.  They took flight, and having very poor night vision they collided with objects.  That just doesn't seem very plausible to me. Were all the dead birds found underneath or next to something they could have flew in to?  I didn't seem like it from the pictures.

It is all very weird and creepy. I guess if animals continue to die en masse  there may be more cause for concern.  There has been a report that shows examples of groups of birds mysteriously dying over the past several years, so this is not a new phenomenon. For some reason it has just got more media attention right now.  That could be a good sign. When the economy was swirling down the toilet we didn't have enough time to care about a few thousand dead birds.

Is all this animal death a sign of the apocalypse? Probably not. Does it give further evidence of the shitty state of the world? I think so. It isn't uncommon to see a dead bird lying around every now and then.  Now I definitely notice them more. I just saw two dead birds today while walking the dog. It makes you wonder what killed them, and if it is something we should be worried about.

The ultimate evidence of something fishy going on would be to see a flock of birds flying along and then just suddenly drop out of the air for no apparent reason.  That would be ultra freaky, and cause for legitimate concern. Until that footage is captured I guess I will choose to believe the theory that they just ran in to stuff because they got scared.

I was going to post links to the different news stories as the week progressed. Basically every news outlet reported on it.  Googling the key words and searching through articles proved to be a more daunting task than I wished to engage in.  I will definitely be staying tuned for more news on bird-pocalypse 2011, and you should too.
