Things have been busy with us lately. For the last 3 weeks I have been gone more than I have been home. I took a trip for work to PA, then a couple days after I got back we drove up to Indiana for a week of vacation. It was our first long car trip with the baby, and she did great. Anyway, a couple days before we were leaving to drive north I started getting red bumps on my leg. Amanda had poison ivy not too long ago, so we assumed that I had it too.
I've had poison ivy a few times in my life. Luckily every other time I've just had a few itchy bumps and then it goes away. No big deal. This was different. As the week went on it got worse. Way worse. The last couple days of our trip I had open sores on my leg and it started popping up in other patches. We called the doctor and scheduled an appointment for last Friday when we got back.
Right away the doctor knew I didn't have poison ivy. He said it was likely a bacterial infection. Impetigo is fairly common and usually not too serious. I think I may have had it when I was in high school. I think I might have the worst case possible. There were two spots on my leg about the size of half dollar that basically didn't have skin anymore. It is nasty and painful. I've been taking antibiotics for a few days now and it seems to be getting better, though not fast enough for me. I'm ready for it to be gone.
I'm not sure where I got it. Kids typically get it in gym class, or you can get it from exercise equipment that hasn't been cleaned off. I certainly haven't been exercising, so we can rule that out. The most likely candidate is my hotel in PA, or possibly the airport/airplane seat. I was already a germaphobe before this, but now I think I'm taking it to the next level. Just thinking about it is disgusting me. I'm not touching anything in public anymore. I might have to stop traveling, or start bringing a plastic cover for anywhere I want to sit. And you can forget about sleeping in hotel beds. That is a petrie dish of evil that is just waiting to kill you.
