I've wanted to get an iPhone for years. However, I never wanted to pay the extra money for the data plan that has to go along with it. When the iPhone 4 was announced I wanted to get one of those really bad. If I would have been eligible for upgrade when it was released I probably would have gone ahead and done it. However, I wasn't eligible until this February. That is only a few months away from June (the month in which apple has announced and/or released every iPhone) so I was just going to wait.
A few months ago my current phone (Nokia e71x) started randomly restarting itself or just completely turning off. It was a minor annoyance. Then it got worse. At the hospital when our baby was born I snapped a picture with my cell phone and tried to email it to my Mom and Sister. I tried 3 or 4 times and halfway through the message every time it would restart. It was so frustrating. Sometimes it will get fits of constant restarting. On the way to Vegas it kept turning itself off. In Vegas it somehow killed the battery at 10am and I couldn't get back to my room to charge it until late that night. I assume it had been restarting itself all morning because the battery was fully charged when I left the room. I could list other examples, but you get the point. I am going to be traveling more in the next few months, so I need a cell phone that will be a little more dependable.
All these issues with my cell phone just got me more excited for the new iPhone in June. Wait? What is that? It isn't coming out until October now? Holy crap! I do not want to wait that long. I'm not sure I can wait that long. Apple, I finally am willing to cave in and buy your devil device, and this is what you do to me.
I have a few options. I could get an iPhone 4.... which is just crazy, or I could get an Android phone. Either way, when the iPhone 5 comes out in the fall I am probably going to be pissed. I could wait for the iPhone.... This is what I have been leaning towards. Usually with tech, the longer you wait the better. My Nokia has been doing pretty well the last few weeks. We traveled last week and I had no issues with it. I will have a chance to test it again in a few more weeks. Based on that I can decide.
Then on Friday the ex-Engadget guys released a mock-up of what they think the next iPhone might look like based on their sources. Their new site is www.thisismynext.com if you are interested. Is this what I am waiting for? A sliver of a phone that looks like it is impossible to hang on to? To me, it looks pretty bad. Definitely not cool. It doesn't even had a 4" screen. They expect it will only get bumped up to 3.7". Hmm... I highly doubt the next iPhone will look like this. Apple is pretty good at making awesome hardware, so I'm pretty confident it is going to look... awesome. (I definitely would like a 4" screen though.) I am more interested to see what they do with the next iteration of the iOS software. There are a lot of improvements that need to be made (notifications) and I expect them to make at least a couple significant changes.
I'm not sure what I'm gonna do. I guess it depends on how my Nokia holds out over the next few weeks, and what we hear about iOS in June as WWDC.
